How do we navigate the impossibility of a fading relationship as it shifts and changes.
In this stunning piece of woven wall art that is framed, I use the forgotten wools from half knit jumpers, precious scraps carefully bound for future use and tangled leftovers in sewing box bottoms to reconstruct a circular woven weave.
These wools, primarily taken from my mother’s knitting basket, represent the last fragments of our fading relationship as my mother slips slowly into her Demented world. How do I use the time I have left where she still remembers me? I ask her every question I can about my birth, I converse about her summer childhood on the beach at Ardmore, I attempt to forgive and give thanks again.
My mother spent our childhood knitting us jumpers and making us clothes. Now, I take these traditional, often undervalued skills and attempt to reorder our life to make sense of the now. The circular motion of making touched on the continuing cycles we find ourselves in through past and future generations.
In this framed woven wall art, all stitches and wool endings are exposed, realising that now matter how hard I try, there will always be loose ends that either time nor place can resolve.
The wools have been infused with Copper Coast rocks and stones prior to use, grounding the piece in mother’s Waterford roots and spritzed with the essence of Mugwort, a plant traditionally known for its relational properties of interdependence and dependence.
