Ever ask yourself: How did I end up here?
I was recently having a conversation with a client and she looked at me and said “How did I end up here?” There was a touch of sadness in her voice, and for a moment we held that feeling. Its the feeling when you look at yourself in the mirror and wonder how you ended up like this.
Like this. It can mean different things for different people. For some, its that extra weight around the belly that simply crept on. for others, its the dry pale skin that is showing the passage of time. For others its the balding or grey hair that reminds us that we are ageing.
What interested me about her comment was not that time had passed, because time is always passing. Its that she feels like she suddenly woke up and saw where she was at. I wonder how this happens to us?
Is it because life speeds by and we grow busy with this and that. Is it because we have lost touch with ourselves as the needs of others take over. I didn’t have an answer for her. And I don’t think she had an answer either.
So what to do?
In some cases, when we look at ourselves in the mirror and see aspects of ourselves we would rather not see, it is simply a reminder that we are human, and subject to the same cycles of life as eery other living thing on this planet.
Yet, in other cases, its time to take stock. Rather than continue to ask yourself “How did I get here” perhaps turn it around slightly. Perhaps “Here I am now. Where would I like to go next”
Because its never too late, you are never too old, you are never too busy. Unless of course you chose to tell yourself you are.
