Meditation Drawing and Doodling

Imagine if there was an easy and gentle way into a more creative self-care?

Meditation Drawing and Doodling are simple tools to assist us in becoming more self aware and form a deeper connection to our inner worlds.

How Meditation Drawing and Doodling Works

What is Meditation Doodling?

Meditation doodling is a simple, fast and safe way for you to manage and calm your nervous system in the busyness of day to day life.

It is perfect for those with no artistic background but who are curious about alternative ways to build resilience.

Participants are often looking for other ways of sustaining themselves in their work or family lives.

It combines some of the basic principles of meditation - focusing on the breath, noticing the sensations in the body, turning the attention inwards - with simple repetitive mark making and line drawing. Meditation drawing has been associated with improving memory, assisting in processing overwhelm and stress, enhancing self-awareness, and helping with learning

It allows you to tap into your creative side, which can improve big picture thinking, and support the management of ongoing workloads. In my own experience, it has been such an effective tool in managing stress and overwhelm on a regular basis and that’s why I offer sessions.

What happens in a Meditation Doodling session?

Each meditation drawing session is crafted to allow for the greatest ease and relaxation.

We start with a short meditation. Then I guide the session by asking you to begin to repeat a variety of mark making. These drawing practices engage your brain in enough activity to keep you focused and concentrated, yet the slowing and focusing on the breath allows the nervous system to take on a more parasympathetic or tranquil position.

After sessions, participants often report feeling more grounded, more open to new ideas and more able to cope with the stresses of life. This gentle and effective technique is also a great alternative to those who struggle with traditional meditation.

How my Meditation Drawing sessions work

Each session takes place on Zoom and last about 30- 40 minutes.

You’ll be sent a Zoom link, with instructions on what to expect and how to prepare for the sessions. Earphones and a comfortable seating arrangement are recommended.

Each session starts with a grounding meditation and is followed by simple creative exercise suitable for those with no art experience. These sessions are designed for those with busy schedules or those in busy work environments.

Every Tuesday at lunchtime, I run an open and ongoing Meditation Drawing session called the Tuesday Tune-In. Running from 12.30 to 1.00PM, it is tailored for people working in offices or at home. You can grab a cuppa, eat your lunch or simply take time out to engage in the drawing exercises. Read more or HERE

I also create Mediation Drawing workshops for organisations, community organisations and charities who are considering their Wellbeing and Mental Health Programmes. Reach out to lucy@lucyhyland.com if you feel this could be the right fit for your workplace or organisation.

What people say about Meditation Drawing and Doodling Workshops?

Jo's Story

I really enjoyed the session yesterday. I loved how you named all the ridiculous thoughts that might be running through our minds – like I’m not good at drawing ripples! And I loved how it changed from the meditative to the creative so effortlessly and wonderfully.
I’ve been through a big life change recently and bizarrely for me (someone who usually has a million projects on the go) I spent a lot of time colouring in. It seemed to be the only thing my brain could manage.
The doodling meditation feels like a lovely transition to something a little more creative yet still absorbing and relaxing.

Colette's Story

‘I have really begun to rely on my Meditation Doodling sessions in the week. It’s probably the only time I get to stop, take a pause and check in with where I’m at. The drawing exercises are so simple yet the repetitive element of them keeps me engaged. It’s like the part of my brain that worries endlessly switches off and I can find some time to just process. All sorts of things pop into my mind. By the end I’m reinvigorated for the day.”

Creative self-care for tuning in

Each week, we’ll share 30 minutes of meditation doodling as a community. We reconnect and replenish ourselves in the company of others by slowing down, mindfully drawing and coming back to the breath. This is a great weekly tool to destress and build resilience.

Each session contains a short meditation/visualisation followed by a simple guided creative exercise. We focus on the breath, on making marks and on embodied movements.

No drawing ability required and no art materials needed. Simply bring a pen/pencil and paper and a cup of tea.

Tuesday 12.30-1.00 pm (GMT)

Price: €10 per session
